What It Allows

This is your first pilot certificate. It allows you to fly solo and carry passengers during the day and night under Visual Flight Rules (VFR).

  • Must be at least 17 years old
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Pass the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test (written exam)
  • Receive flight training on all required areas of operation
  • Pass the FAA Practical Test (checkride) with a designated examiner
  • Log a minimum of 40 hours of total flight time, including at least 20 hours of dual instruction and 10 hours of solo flight (with specific cross-country requirements)
  • Complete at least 3 hours of night flight training and 3 hours of instrument training

What It Allows

This rating allows you to fly in clouds and low visibility conditions under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). It greatly improves safety and opens more flying opportunities.

  • Must already hold a Private Pilot Certificate
  • Must have at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot in Command (10 of those hours must be in airplanes)
  • Log at least 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight time
  • Receive at least 15 hours of instrument flight training from a CFII
  • Pass the FAA Instrument Rating Knowledge Test (written exam)
  • Pass the FAA Instrument Rating Practical Test (checkride) with a designated examiner

  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Pass the FAA Commercial Pilot Knowledge Test (written exam)
  • Pass the FAA Commercial Pilot Practical Test (checkride)
  • Log a minimum of 250 hours of total flight time as Pilot in Command, including: 100 hours in powered aircraft, 50 hours of cross-country flight (with specific long cross-country requirements), 10 hours of instrument training, and 10 hours of training in a complex aircraft

This rating allows you to teach and sign off students for flight training and ratings. It is the first step toward becoming a professional flight instructor.

  • Must hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate with an Instrument Rating

  • Pass the FAA Fundamentals of Instructing Knowledge Test
  • Pass the FAA Flight Instructor Knowledge Test (for the appropriate category and class)
  • Pass the FAA Flight Instructor Practical Test (which includes both ground and flight portions)
